Better Searching Techniques using Google

Do you know how to search the web for data wll enough with Google? Before we learn that, let's take a look at how Google presents the seach results.

Interpreting Google Search Results

Let's disect what we see. The search terms were 'chess software'. Google found 3.76 million pages with the terms 'chess' and 'software'.

ITEM 1: These are search results of item stored in my computer. You might or might not have them, depending on whether you have installed Google Desktop.

ITEM 2: The number of pages that Google has indexed having the words 'chess' and 'software'. The first page lists only 10 results, but this is customizable. My setting is set for Google to list 20 items per page.

ITEM 3: Why is this indented? Indented paragraphs are listings within the site (in this case, chesscentral.com) that also has the search items. Previously, Google use to list all pages within a particular site in its usual format, without indentation. Later this was changed to indicate that certain sites had more pages with the televent search items and could therefore be more focused in that particular search items.

ITEM 4: These are paid listings. You can get now use Google Adwords to get you site listed on the first page for the search items that the web user has searched for.

ITEM 5: Google caches all sites that it crawles into its database. This is good when the site is unavailable for that particular moment, you could still access data on that page, depending on how old the cached page in Google is.
Similar pages
brings another page with listings more closely matching the items in that particular link.
