A Trip to Margaret River and Augusta, Western
Australia
It was the long, 5-day Easter break and on Easter
Monday, April 25, 2011, my wife and I took a trip down south to the
famous Margaret River valley. We also popped into Augusta to see the
light house (we were late and couldnt get into the tour but wasnt told
by the lady at the counter, who cheerfully collected AUD10 from us just
to let us into the grounds - what a rip-off). This is our story.

This is where Margaret River and Augusta is relative to Perth city.
The journey from Perth to Margaret River will take you about 3
hours, and another 45 minutes to Augusta. It's like driving from
Kuala Lumpur to Penang if you're in Malaysia.
Pictures below is what you see all throughout the initial part of
your drive down south. The roads are lovely but everythings brown
after the summer scorching sun.
Now I know where my daily milk comes from.
The road goes on and on. The speed limit outside the city is 100
km/h before topping off at 110km/h. But beware. At major junctions,
the speed limit comes down to 80 km/h, sometimes even 60 km/h and if
you're not careful, you'll easily get a speeding ticket.
And the cool Harley Davidson bikers.
Slow moving vehicles are quite common once you're way out of the
city.
Pictures below show the sunset at Prevely Beach. We were late in
getting to the beach as people down south tend to drive a little too
slow.
Note the strong waves and current. No joke. This is where the Indian
Ocean and the Southern Ocean collide.
We managed to capture the last bit of the sun as it setted against
the windy ocean.
These pictures below were taken from a different part of the ocean,
called Ocean View.
Cape Leeuwin is where the Indian Ocean and the Southern ocean meet.
The waves and current here are strong. And the shore is filled with
rocks (as seen from the pictures above and below). A lighthouse was
built. Before the lighthouse was erected, there were 22 ship wrecks
in this region and only one afterwards. Must have been the ship we
often hear in jokes about the captain of the ship not wanting to
take orders from a lovely private, who happened to be the lighthouse
master :).
Whale watching is also a common activity in these region.
The lighthouse saved many ships since it was built. Below are some
records of its service.
Both sides of this passage is covered by ocean. One's the Indian
Ocean, the other is the Southern Ocean.
A break in the heavens for a ray of light to shine through the dark
clouds. It was a cloudy and rainy day when we visited the
lighthouse.
Sadly, we couldnt go up the lighthouse because all the tours were
fully booked and we arrived 20 minutes before they closed. But this
is the lighthouse. And an interesting fact about the lighthouse is
that it can only be painted on one side of the wall, either the
outer or inner surface. Apparently this is because paining both
sides of the lighthouse will cause moisture to be retained in the
walls and cause the walls to be soft. So, the paint on the inner
walls were subsequently removed.
The following pictures were taken during the ride back from the
lighthouse to Margaret River town.
Tall trees area. The trees in this are are taller than the
surroundings and provide very good cover against the sun. Lovely
trees.
Pictures below are of Margaret River town centre. There's an IGA
there and also a Coles. The Information Centre will provide you with
all the information you need and the staff there are really very
helpful.
Thus ends our short trip to Margaret River and Augusta.Should you intend to go there, do leave Perth early and its best to
spend a night there. We only left Perth at 10 am and since
everything closes at 5 pm, there wasnt much we could do in the short
time as driving between attractions takes time.
Enjoy yourself...
